It’s been six years since one of the greatest canine trainers in the world appeared on our cover for Hispanic Network Magazine. In our 2010 Summer issue, we featured our conversation with celerity dog behaviorist Cesar Millan, in which he talked about his inspiration for working with dogs, how he came about introducing that work into show business, and even advice on what to do if you’re a first-time dog owner. Remember folks, it’s “exercise, discipline, and then affection!”
Cesar Millan has certainly come a long way from when he entered the United States as a 21-year-old immigrant from Mexico. From working as a dog groomer in San Diego to training dogs for A-list celebrities, and finally running his own reality television program, Dog Whisperer on National Geographic, Cesar has achieved a lengthy list of accomplishments, which only continues to expand. On January 5, 2013, Nat Geo Wild premiered Cesar Millan’s Leader of the Pack. The show aired as a documentary television series, following Millan in his efforts to provide a new home for shelter dogs in Miraflores, Spain. The series took place in Millan’s newly-built Dog Psychology Center and centered on selected individuals and families who were competing to show that they can provide the best home for his sheltered dogs.
A year later in 2014, Nat Geo Wild premiered Cesar 911, in which Millan enters into neighborhoods terrorized by untrained or aggressive dogs. Called upon by concerned neighbors, friends, and family members of dog owners with misbehaving canines, Cesar shows these owners and his audience how even the meanest pooches can be rehabilitated with the right discipline, training, and affection. In addition to Leader of the Pack, Cesar helped launch his son’s career in entertainment, too. He served as the producer for Nick Jr.’s children’s television series, Mutt & Stuff, which stars his son Calvin Millan. Currently, Cesar is also working on getting a network deal for his other son, Andre.
Cesar Millan has released several new books and training guides for dog owners in the past years, but the biggest and newest development that has occurred in Cesar’s life is his recent engagement to girlfriend of six years, Jahira Dar. During a trip to Greece, Millan popped the question and announced early this April that Jahira said, “Yes!” On his website, Cesar describes his fiancé as someone who “embodies the principles that [he] prize[s] the most— honesty, integrity and loyalty. On top of all of that,” he adds, “she loves dogs and Mother Nature just as much as I do.” Congrats, Cesar!
